Dental Implants: A Great Alternative For Dentures

For many years people have been coping with the loss of one or more teeth.  In the past, the most prevalent option was the use of dentures, or fake teeth.  However, many find them to be a very suboptimal solution.  Dental implants represent a very compelling alternative to dentures to help replace missing teeth. Cedar Park cosmetic dentistry office offer this service.

The key to having healthy replacement teeth is a solid support for the teeth.  Dentures do not work well for most people because only an adhesive is used to stick them to the gum.  As a result, they are not stable and can be unstable when chewing.  Dental implants were invented to get around this problem.

Dental implants are medical devices that are surgically attached to the jaw.  Once they are in place, replacement teeth can be firmly mounted to them.

Due to the positive support, these teeth should feel just as solid as normal teeth.  Thus, user satisfaction amongst people who receive dental implants tends to be quite high.

One disadvantage of dental implants as opposed to dentures is that an invasive surgical procedure is necessary to get them in place.  It also follows that dental implants tend to be much more expensive than dentures.

There are two basic types of dental implants that a patient could receive.  The most invasive to deploy are known as endosteal implants.

These implants require a person to schedule two different surgeries to get the  desired result.  The implants are first implanted directly into the jawbone.  After that, the oral surgeon has to wait for the surrounding gum tissue to repair itself. Once that has happened, a second surgery is scheduled to put a post into the implant itself. This post is what will later be used to attach each individual artificial tooth to the dental implant.

The second type of dental implant is a subperiosteal implant.  This implant is a metal frame that is permanently attached to the jawbone right underneath the gums.  They come with posts pre-attached, so that there is no need to wait for a second surgery.  As the gums heal around the implant, the implant is fixed in place.  After this occurs, the dentist can come in and attach the new permanent teeth.

Dental implants are a great way for someone who has lost one or more teeth to replace what they have lost.  Unlike dentures, dental implants are stable and generally are as functional as normal teeth.  While dental implant placement is more expensive and more invasive, the majority of those who receive them believe that it was worth the extra effort.

Considering Dental Implants For Dad

My dad had been having some trouble with his teeth and his mouth in general. It had been going on for a few months, but he was just so stubborn that he did not want to visit dental implants Cedar Park dentist to see what was going on.

I finally decided that I would trick Dad into going to the dentist. Mostly, I was tired of hearing him complain, plus I was a little worried that something was really wrong with his mouth.

I told my dad that he had a dental cleaning and if he thinks the appointment is for a routine type thing, he will go without too much grumbling. Luckily, the dentist and hygienist were in on the trick with me and agreed that he needed to be seen and having an extra cleaning wouldn't hurt.

After seeing the dentist, we went into his office for a serious conversation. It turned out that my dad's teeth were in bad shape and he really needed dental implants. I knew that it would take a lot of talking, pleading, and begging to get my dad to agree to talk with the dentist about the implants he needed to help him have a healthier mouth.
